My Thoughts on Gentoo Linux

A while ago, I experimented with Gentoo Linux on my computer. I removed it though and put Arch Linux back on my computer. Even though I didn't have much time with it, I learned quite a bit.
The first thing I noticed was the power Portage, the package manager had. It took longer to download something, it ignored packages that you tell it to ignore. So if you're using a KDE interface, you can take out any packages with a "-gnome" command in a specific file. This is really good in the long run for speed.

Like Arch Linux, Gentoo Linux is all about customization. It's even more so than Arch Linux. While it's really nice to get rid of a lot of things you don't need, it's kind of hard to build a Linux kernel if it's you're first time. For the advanced Linux user, this would be really good for them.

All in all, Gentoo Linux is a little difficult for day-to-day use, it's really good for the hardcore developer. However, I would have to recommend Arch Linux before I recommend Gentoo. Arch, while not as customize-able as Gentoo, does give you a lot of freedom. Both of them are great Linux distributions for someone who knows a lot about Linux and wants some freedom in their Linux flavor.
